Capital Defense Counsel, a division of the Mississippi Office of State Public Defender, is seeking applicants for the position of Mitigation Specialist.  Capital Defense was created to provide representation to indigent defendants charged with death penalty eligible offenses at trial and on direct appeal.  The office is located in Jackson and handles cases statewide.  Travel is required.  Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.  The position is full time.  Annual beginning salary is $45,000 to $59,500 DOE plus state benefits.

Applicants should posses a master’s in social work or related field or bachelor’s degree and minimum of two years working as a death penalty mitigation specialist or similar work experience.

The mitigation specialist will assist trial counsel in investigation and preparation of the penalty phase of capital murder trials where the state is seeking the death penalty.


Specific duties include, but are not limited to:


·           Conduct interviews with client and work with client and the client’s family while the case in pending. 

·           Obtain records regarding the client and the client’s family including but not limited to, records related to the case and to the client’s criminal history, birth and other medical records, school records, social service agency records, juvenile court and juvenile probation/ court services records, employment records, military records, adult education records, jail/ prison/ parole/ probation records, treatment records, and other documents and items illustrating the client’s life. 

·           Identify, locate and interview potential penalty phase witnesses.  

·           Identify factors in the client’s background that require expert evaluations.  

·           Assist in locating appropriate experts.  

·           Provide background materials and information to these experts to enable them to perform competent and reliable evaluations.  

·           Consult with the attorney(s) regarding development of the theory of the case and strategy.  

·           Prepare social history reports.

All advertising must be related to the social work profession and is subject to the publisher's approval.  NASW MS reserves the right to reject advertisements for any reason at any time and is not liable for any alleged loss or damages if an advertisement is omitted for any reason.  NASW MS complies with the provisions of applicable federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination.  Placement of ads will be at NASW MS's discretion, although job vacancies and other advertiser's preferences will be met whenever possible.  The placement of an advertising order constitutes an acceptance of all the rates and conditions under which advertising is sold at the time.

Social Work Employment Advertisement Rate--Ads must be submitted in the required format below.  We will not accept/edit material from brochures.  There is a $50 charge per job vacancy with 100 words or less.  There is a $80 charge per job vacancy with 101-200 words and a $100 charge per job vacancy with 201-300 words.  This charges are based on one month  (30 days from posting) listings. Non- Employment Advertisement Rate All ads related to to social work but not employment opportunities should be submitted as email or camera ready copy.  There is a $25 additional charge if ad is not email or camera ready. These Ads are limited to 1/2 page, approximately 7 X 5 inches.  The cost is $300 per month (30 days from posting).  All advertisements must be paid PRIOR to publication by money order or check payable to NASW MS.  E-mail camera ready digital ads in .doc, .gif, .jpeg, or .pdf format to naswms@bellsouth.net .
